In Spain there is a great culture for wines, liquors and other derivatives, so it is not surprising that there is also a culture for vermouth.<\/p>\n\n

Origin of Vermouth<\/h2>\n\n

We can use both the word vermouth and vermouth to refer to Vemouth. Translated into French as vermouth, the name comes etymologically from the German word wermut, meaning absinthe.<\/p>\n\n

It is said that the first man to prepare this drink in ancient Greece was the physician and philosopher Hippocrates. The consumption of this drink became widespread during the Middle Ages, under the name of hippocras. And only a little later its derivative, vermouth, was produced in massive quantities in Italy and France in the 18th century.<\/p>\n\n

In Spain, the first winery was established at the end of the 19th century in the city of Reus. At present, there are more than 22 specialized wineries throughout the country, in the Valencian Community, Castilla, Madrid, Andalusia, etc.<\/p>\n\n

Types of vermouth<\/h2>\n\n

There are several types of vermouth: red, white, ros\u00e9, extra dry, dry or semi-dry. May contain between 16 and 22% alcohol.<\/p>\n\n

This classification is the one conveyed by many cocktail books, which simply refer to the French or Italian style when speaking of “dry” or “sweet”.<\/p>\n\n

However, in both European countries, vermouth producers soon adopted both styles. All of these styles are now available in semi-sweet and semi-dry from vermouth manufacturers.<\/p>\n\n
